Distinguished and Famous people from Berri and Barmera

Berri and Barmera's notable connections reach from Olympic swimming and league football to country music. They include people born locally and others whose work became part of the region's cultural life.

🏊 Hayden Stoeckel

Hayden Stoeckel's club history includes Berri, and the town celebrated his Olympic performances in 2008 by approving the naming of its swimming pool after him. At Beijing he won bronze in the 100-metre backstroke and silver in the medley relay. A further relay bronze followed at London in 2012. His regional association includes club swimming as well as the pool named in his honour; his birthplace was Renmark, elsewhere in the Riverland. His international results included success both as an individual backstroker and as part of relay teams.

🏅 Russell Ebert

Russell Ebert was born in Berri in 1949 before playing junior football at Loxton and senior football at Waikerie. His move to Port Adelaide began a career that included four Magarey Medals and three SANFL premierships. He also played a season for North Melbourne and later coached at club and state level. Community programs and charitable work formed another part of his public contribution. Berri is his birthplace, while the wider Riverland provided his early football pathway.

🎵 Dean 'Rocky' Page

Dean 'Rocky' Page combined country music, broadcasting and showmanship, including theatrical hypnotism. He founded the Riverland Country Music Festival and established Barmera's country-music and district-history museum, opened by Slim Dusty in 1995. His radio work at 5RM stretched across three decades. The museum's collection preserved musical instruments, photographs and broadcasting equipment, giving a physical record to an entertainment culture often experienced only on stage or over the airwaves. His local legacy centres on organising and preserving that cultural life.
